Ways to travel

Wildlife & nature

Watching wild animals simply get on with their lives is a privilege worth travelling for.

Watching elephants cross a plain at dusk, or a whale surface beside the boat, is a gift that rarely feels ordinary however often it happens. Wildlife journeys suit anyone curious about the natural world, whether you're planning a first safari or have long wanted to see mountain gorillas, whales or the Galápagos Islands.

Nature keeps its own timetable, so we're open about it. Sightings can never be guaranteed; seasons, weather and animal movements vary from year to year. What we can do is help you choose the right place and time, the right pace and guides who know the land. That usually gives you the best chance of memorable encounters, while leaving room for the quieter details: birdsong, tracks in the sand, a sky full of stars.

First, we listen. Then, we explore what's possible.

How we approach it

  1. 01

    Honest about timing

Migration, nesting and breeding seasons shift from year to year. We explain what's usually likely in a given month, and what isn't.

  2. 02

    Guides who know the land

A good naturalist guide changes everything: how you read tracks, where you wait, when you move on. We look for local specialists who share what they know generously.

  3. 03

    Respect for the place

A respectful distance, following park rules and, where it suits you, smaller camps are part of how we plan, so the experience stays calm for you and for the animals.

Ideas for a journey

Illustrative ideas, not bookable products.

  1. 01

    Serengeti and Ngorongoro

Game drives across the Serengeti plains and a day in the Ngorongoro Crater. In some months the wildebeest migration passes nearby, though its timing varies each year.

  2. 02

    Gorilla trekking in Uganda

A guided walk into Bwindi Impenetrable Forest with a gorilla-trekking permit. Once the trackers locate a habituated family, visits usually last around an hour.

  3. 03

Cloud forest and the Osa Peninsula

Night walks in Monteverde's cloud forest, then Costa Rica's Osa Peninsula, where scarlet macaws, monkeys and sloths are often seen.

  4. 04

    Whales in northern Norway

Winter in the fjords around Tromsø, when orcas and humpbacks often follow the herring, with a chance of northern lights on clear nights.
