Illustrative journey ideas — not bookable packages. No prices, dates or accommodation are implied.
Costa Rica keeps nature close: sloths in the trees by the road, hummingbirds at the lodge veranda and howler monkeys calling at dawn. Distances are manageable, and adventure — from easy walks across hanging bridges to kayaking or rafting — can be as gentle or as active as you like.
In this sample the journey begins beneath Arenal volcano, climbs into the cool Monteverde cloud forest and ends on the coast — the Pacific or, if a different mood appeals, the Caribbean. The pace is easy to adjust: more time for two for couples, shorter drives and more free afternoons for families.
The route
The journey
- San José
- Arenal
- Monteverde
- Pacific or Caribbean coast
01Day 1 · Central Valley
Arriving
The first night is best spent near the airport, among the coffee farms of the Central Valley, so you can rest properly after the long flight.
02Days 2–4 · Arenal
Beneath Arenal volcano
Around three hours north lies La Fortuna. Here you might walk hanging-bridge trails through the rainforest, climb down to La Fortuna waterfall, paddle on Lake Arenal and ease into the hot springs in the evening. The summit is often in cloud, so a clear morning always feels like a gift.
03Days 5–7 · Monteverde
In the cloud forest
The road around the lake to Monteverde takes a few hours, and part of the way can be done by boat. Up here the air is cooler and the trees are draped in moss and epiphytes. In the morning, with a naturalist guide, you might look for quetzals and hummingbirds; a night walk reveals frogs, insects and sometimes a sloth.
04Days 8–12 · Pacific or Caribbean coast
By the ocean
From Monteverde it's easiest to head down to the Pacific — the Nicoya Peninsula, with beaches loved by surfers, or the area around Manuel Antonio, where forest runs right down to the sand. The Caribbean coast, Tortuguero or Puerto Viejo, offers a different, slower mood, but means a longer journey via San José.
05Days 13–14 · Coast or Central Valley
An unhurried finish
You might spend the last night on the coast and fly out from Liberia in Guanacaste, or return to the Central Valley so the day of travel home feels calmer.
Experience highlights
- 01
Hanging bridges
Trails that run straight through the canopy let you see the forest from a bird's-eye view, no climbing needed.
- 02
A night walk
With a torch and a guide: red-eyed tree frogs, tarantulas at their burrows and sleeping birds. What you'll find is different every time.
- 03
Hot springs
After a day in the forest, an evening in volcano-warmed springs set in a tropical garden.
- 04
A first surf lesson
On the Nicoya Peninsula the waves are often kind to beginners — a good way to try something new.
First, we listen. Then, we explore what's possible.
Make it your own
For families
Shorter drives, stays with pools and gardens, ziplines for older children and more time at the beach.
For couples
A rainforest lodge with volcano views and a few slow days on a quieter beach.
More wildlife
An extension to the Osa Peninsula and Corcovado National Park — more remote and simpler, with remarkably rich wildlife.
Another season
On the Pacific side the dry season usually runs from around December to April; the green season brings lush forest, fewer visitors and afternoon showers. The Caribbean coast often follows a different pattern.
Practical considerations
- Roads are winding, so even short distances take longer than the map suggests.
- You can travel with a driver or rent a car; both are popular.
- Monteverde is cooler and damper than the coast, so a light jacket is useful.
- Wildlife watching always depends on nature: a good guide makes a real difference, but nothing can be known in advance.
General guidance only. Seasons, weather and wildlife are never guaranteed, and travel requirements are always worth checking before you go.
