Adventure & active travel

Adventure is whatever feels new to you — a first multi-day hike counts just as much as a Himalayan pass.

For some people adventure means crossing a high pass in the Himalayas or reaching the summit of Kilimanjaro at sunrise. For others it's a first multi-day hike, a day in a sea kayak or cycling between vineyards. We don't see one as more worthwhile than another. What matters is that the challenge feels right for you, and that you come home glad you tried.

Being honest about fitness and preparation is part of the care. Some routes need training, time to acclimatise and the right season, and we'll say so plainly. Others, like walking from one mountain refuge to the next in the Dolomites or paddling along the Albanian coast, ask for curiosity and reasonable fitness rather than experience. Before suggesting anything, we look at the terrain, the daily distances and the support you'll have along the way.

First, we listen. Then, we explore what's possible.

How we approach it

  1. 01

    Starting where you are

We ask about the walking, cycling or paddling you already do and how you'd like the days to feel, then match routes to that rather than to an ideal.

  2. 02

    Honest about effort

Daily distances, altitude, terrain and the best months are part of the conversation from the start, along with how to train if a route calls for it.

  3. 03

    Experienced local guides

On treks and climbs we work with local specialists who know the ground, the weather and when to turn back, so you can give yourself to the experience.

Ideas for a journey

Illustrative ideas, not bookable products.

  1. 01

    A first trek in Nepal

A shorter Annapurna route such as Poon Hill: a few days on stone stairways between Gurung villages and teahouses, with the high peaks close by.

  2. 02

    Kilimanjaro, well prepared

Six to eight days on a route such as the Machame or Lemosho, with time built in to acclimatise. A real physical challenge, and one worth training for.

  3. 03

Lodge to lodge in the Dolomites

Walking between valley inns and mountain refuges with your main luggage moved ahead, and long lunches on sunny terraces between Val Gardena and Alta Badia.

  4. 04

    Kayaks and bikes in Albania

Paddling past sea caves on the Ionian coast, cycling inland through olive groves and ending the day with a glass of local wine in Berat.

An active week pairs well with slower days afterwards — a trek followed by a beach, or a cycle followed by a few nights somewhere beautiful — and some adventures are easier to begin in a small group.
