Family journeys

Travelling as a family can be a journey of discovery too — planned around your children's ages, your pace and the comforts that make the days work.

A family journey doesn't have to mean a resort, though sometimes that's exactly right. It might mean looking for sloths and toucans in Costa Rica's rainforest, riding the bullet train across Japan, evenings at a safari camp in Tanzania followed by a few days on Zanzibar's beaches, or a long summer evening beside a Norwegian fjord. Discovering somewhere new together can give children — and adults — stories they keep for years.

It also means taking practical things seriously. We'll ask about your children's ages and interests, how they cope with long journeys, what they like to eat and how much downtime everyone needs. From there we look at flight times, travel between places, rooms that suit a family and days with time to rest, so the journey works for the youngest traveller as well as the oldest.

First, we listen. Then, we explore what's possible.

How we approach it

  1. 01

    Everyone gets a say

We ask what each of you enjoys — the dinosaur fan, the teenager who wants to try surfing, the grandparent who'd rather stroll — and look for days in which each of them has a moment of their own.

  2. 02

    Pace and practicalities

Shorter transfers, fewer hotel changes, family rooms and a pool or garden at the end of a long day — the details that decide how a family trip feels.

  3. 03

    Honest about ages and seasons

Some safari lodges have minimum ages, some hikes are too long for small legs, and school holidays often fall in busy or rainy seasons. We'll tell you plainly and suggest what works.

Ideas for a journey

Illustrative ideas, not bookable products.

  1. 01

    Costa Rica, rainforest to coast

Hanging bridges and night walks near the Arenal volcano, a gentle river float looking for wildlife, then beach days on the Pacific coast.

  2. 02

    Japan by train

Tokyo's science museums and parks, the shinkansen to Kyoto, a night in a Hakone ryokan and the deer of Nara's park — at a gentle pace, with free afternoons.

  3. 03

    Safari with a beach finish

Game drives in Tarangire National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater with a family-friendly guide, then a few days on Zanzibar's east coast.

  4. 04

    A Norwegian fjord summer

The Flåm Railway, kayaking on a quiet arm of the Sognefjord and long, light evenings in a cabin by the water.
