Illustrative journey ideas — not bookable packages. No prices, dates or accommodation are implied.
Northern Tanzania's parks are laid out so that each tells a different story: Tarangire with its baobabs and elephants, the green floor of the Ngorongoro Crater, the seemingly endless plains of the Serengeti. Moving between them, the landscape changes, and so do the light, the scents and the rhythm of the day.
After several early mornings on the savannah, it's natural to want to slow down. So this sample journey ends on Zanzibar, an island where Swahili culture, spice-trade history and the warm Indian Ocean give you space to take in everything you've seen.
The route
The journey
- Arusha
- Tarangire
- Ngorongoro Highlands
- Serengeti
- Zanzibar
01Days 1–2 · Arusha
A gentle start beneath Kilimanjaro
After the flight into Kilimanjaro airport, a night at a quiet farm among the coffee plantations around Arusha. It's a time to rest, meet your guide and talk through what you'd most like to see. With energy to spare, you could walk the plantation or paddle a canoe in Arusha National Park.
02Days 3–4 · Tarangire
Baobabs and elephants
Tarangire National Park is often overshadowed by its neighbours, yet in the dry season large herds of elephants usually gather along its river. Giant baobabs, swamp edges and fewer vehicles make it a fine place to settle into the rhythm of safari: early starts, a long midday rest and the evening light.
03Days 5–6 · Ngorongoro Highlands
A day on the crater floor
A night in the cool highlands near Karatu, among farms and coffee fields. Early in the morning you descend into the Ngorongoro Crater, an enclosed world of lake, grassland and woodland where wildlife is often resident year-round. The afternoon might be for resting, or for a walk through highland villages with a local guide.
04Days 7–10 · Serengeti
Plains without end
Four days in the Serengeti leave room to take your time. Where in the park to stay depends on the season: the great migration follows a slightly different path each year, so camps are chosen to give you a good chance of being near the herds, though nothing in nature is guaranteed. If it appeals, an early-morning balloon flight is often possible.
05Days 11–14 · Zanzibar
Stone Town and the Indian Ocean
A light aircraft from the Serengeti to Zanzibar, often with a stop along the way. The first night is in Stone Town, among carved wooden doors, markets and the evening food stalls of the Forodhani Gardens. Then a few days on the coast: a sail on a traditional dhow, some snorkelling, or simply doing nothing at all.
Experience highlights
- 01
Elephants among the baobabs
In the dry season, Tarangire is often one of the best places to watch elephant herds.
- 02
Morning on the Ngorongoro Crater floor
Descending into the crater with the first light, while mist still hangs over the lake.
- 03
Four days in the Serengeti
Enough time for safari to become patient watching rather than a race.
- 04
A dhow at sunset
Sailing a traditional Swahili dhow along Zanzibar's shore as the day cools.
First, we listen. Then, we explore what's possible.
Make it your own
With children
Shorter drives, camps with a pool and family rooms, and safari days with a longer midday break.
As a honeymoon
Smaller, more secluded camps, dinner under the stars and a longer stay on a quiet stretch of Zanzibar or Pemba.
More active
A walking safari with an armed ranger, hikes in the Ngorongoro Highlands or a few extra mornings around Arusha.
In another season
Early in the year the migration is often in the southern Serengeti for the calving season, and the route would be shaped differently.
Practical considerations
- The dry season is usually the most rewarding for wildlife viewing, though the green season has its own appeal: fewer visitors and lush landscapes.
- Travel between parks is usually by 4x4 with a guide; driving days can be long, so it's worth not overloading the route.
- Light aircraft have strict luggage limits, and a soft bag is often required.
- On Zanzibar it's good to respect local customs: modest dress is appreciated in Stone Town and in villages.
General guidance only. Seasons, weather and wildlife are never guaranteed, and travel requirements are always worth checking before you go.
