Island time in Fiji
Nadi, the Mamanuca and Yasawa islands — for families and couples

Fiji is one of those rare places where a beach holiday doesn't mean shutting yourself away in a resort. Boats from Viti Levu reach the Mamanuca and Yasawa islands in an hour or a few: shallow lagoons where children can snorkel straight from the shore, volcanic hills, and villages where evenings begin with a kava ceremony and end in song.
This sample route is unhurried, with two island bases and no long transfers. It can be a journey in its own right or a restful ending to New Zealand or Australia, or even the start, if you'd like to recover from the flight first. The islands, stays and pace would be chosen around who's travelling: a family with young children, teenagers keen to dive, or a couple in search of quiet.

- Nadi
01Days 1–2 · Nadi & western Viti Levu
First, a chance to recover
After the long flight, the first night is by the sea near Nadi airport. The next day, if you feel like it, some gentle outings: the Garden of the Sleeping Giant with its orchids and forest paths, the colourful Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple, a reminder of Fiji's large Indo-Fijian community, and Nadi market with its tropical fruit. Then a first dinner and an early night before the boat.
02Days 3–6 · The Mamanuca Islands
A lagoon where you can simply be
From Port Denarau by boat, anything from half an hour to a couple of hours depending on the island. The Mamanucas are close, the water usually calm, and the islands vary a great deal: some with kids' clubs and family bures, others for adults only. Days take care of themselves: snorkelling on the reef, kayaks, a trip to a sandbar at low tide, a lesson in weaving a basket from palm fronds. In the evening the sun sets straight into the sea.
03Days 7–9 · The Yasawa Islands
Further north, quieter and wilder
A catamaran or seaplane carries you further north into the Yasawa chain, higher, drier islands with empty bays. A village visit is well worth it here: a sevusevu ceremony with kava, the school, hymns on Sunday. In some places manta rays appear in the channels roughly from May to October, and you can swim in the limestone caves of Sawa-i-Lau, both depending on season and weather. For children: sand, crabs and their first fish underwater.
04Days 10–11 · Nadi, and onwards
A last sunset, and the way home — or onwards
Back on Viti Levu, the last night can be spent on the Coral Coast or near Nadi, so the morning flight isn't a rush. From Nadi, flights to Auckland take about three hours and to Sydney or Brisbane about four, so Fiji makes a natural ending after New Zealand or Australia. The same way round, it can just as easily be the start: a few days on the islands before a longer journey south.
Experience highlights
- 01
Reef straight from the beach
Shallow lagoons where even younger children can see coral and bright fish for the first time.
- 02
Kava and a village evening
A sevusevu ceremony, a lovo meal cooked in an earth oven and singing that carries on late.
- 03
Sandbars at low tide
Strips of white sand that rise from the lagoon for only a few hours.
- 04
Yasawa quiet
Empty bays, hill trails and, in season, a chance to swim near manta rays.
First, we listen. Then, we explore what's possible.
Make it your own
Taveuni instead of the Yasawas
A flight to green Taveuni: waterfalls in Bouma park and the soft-coral reefs of the Somosomo Strait, especially good for teenagers who dive and for couples.
Just the two of you
Adults-only islands, private breakfasts on the sand and a sunset sail: a quieter, more romantic version of the journey.
After New Zealand or Australia
Trimmed to 5–7 days and one island, it becomes a restful ending after more active weeks further south.
In another season
Roughly May to October is usually drier and a little cooler; November to April is warmer and more humid, with storms and cyclones possible, so the plan stays more flexible.
Practical considerations
- Boat transfers between islands depend on weather and sea conditions; some islands are reached only by boat, so transfer days are kept calm, with no tight connections.
- On a village visit it's customary to cover shoulders and knees and to present kava root to the chief — a guide will explain the customs.
- Island stays vary widely, from family bures with kids' clubs to adults-only islands, so we choose carefully around your group.
- For vaccinations and health advice, check with a doctor or travel clinic before you travel.
