Children often remember Thailand not by its temples but by its moments: a longtail boat weaving through canals between houses on stilts, a train rolling slowly over a river, the calls of gibbons in the mist above a lake, or an evening when dolphins surface beside the boat. This route is built from moments like these, with nature, water and simple adventures, and without long days in the car.

A first long-haul trip can take some patience with children, so the start is gentle and every stop has at least two nights. Encounters with animals are only ever about watching them from a respectful distance: no elephant riding and no shows. The pace, the stays and the activities would be shaped around your children's ages and interests, and around school holidays.

The route

The journey

  1. Bangkok
  2. Kanchanaburi
  3. Khao Sok
  4. Khanom or Koh Samui
  1. A longtail boat in a narrow canal between wooden stilt houses in Bangkok

    01Days 1–3 · Bangkok

A gentle start on the water

The first days are slow: a hotel by the river with a pool, long sleeps and short outings in the cooler hours. A river bus can take you to Wat Pho and its giant reclining Buddha, and a longtail boat can turn off into the Thonburi canals, where houses stand on stilts and neighbours trade from boats. Afternoons could bring a fruit tasting at a market, where children choose their own mangosteen or dragon fruit, and evenings a quiet walk in a park.

  2. A train crossing the railway bridge over the River Kwai in Kanchanaburi

    02Days 4–5 · Kanchanaburi

A river, a train and emerald waterfalls

About three hours west by road to Kanchanaburi on the Khwae river. The historic railway bridge recalls a painful chapter of the Second World War; for older children it's a chance to talk about history, and a ride on the old train along the river delights everyone. The next day brings Erawan Falls: seven tiers in a green forest, with lower pools where you can swim. The nights are spent in a riverside house, where the evenings hold nothing but water and cicadas.

  3. A longtail boat on a misty lake among limestone mountains in Khao Sok National Park

    03Days 6–9 · Khao Sok National Park

    Rainforest and floating houses

South by overnight sleeper train, which often becomes an adventure of its own for children, or by a short flight to Surat Thani. The first nights are in lodges at the forest's edge: a guided night walk looking for insects and frogs, and a day floating down a calm river in inflatable canoes. Then by boat across Cheow Lan Lake, between limestone cliffs, to a floating house on the water. Mornings bring mist over the lake and often the songs of gibbons from the forest; with a little luck, you'll see hornbills too.

  4. A small boat with people on clear blue water below the hills of Koh Samui

    04Days 10–14 · Khanom or Koh Samui

A beach with nowhere else to be

About two and a half hours east by road to the Gulf of Thailand. Khanom is a calm stretch of coast with long beaches and fishing villages, where pink dolphins are often seen from a boat, though nothing in nature is guaranteed. For more comforts, a quieter side of Koh Samui works well too, a short ferry away. The days are simple: sandcastles, snorkelling in the shallows, coconut ice cream and long lunches under the trees. Flights home leave from Nakhon Si Thammarat, Surat Thani or Samui.

Experience highlights

  1. 01

    Bangkok by boat

River buses and longtail boats: far more exciting for children than any tour coach.

  2. 02

    The night train south

Bunk beds, rice fields sliding past the window and a morning in a different part of the country.

  3. 03

    A night on the lake

A floating house on Cheow Lan Lake, kayaks by the door and the sounds of the forest after dark.

  4. 04

    Wildlife at a respectful distance

Gibbons, hornbills and perhaps dolphins, watched in the wild rather than through a ticket to a show.

First, we listen. Then, we explore what's possible.

Make it your own

  • With little ones

A flight instead of the night train, a longer pool break in Bangkok and a lakeside lodge instead of a floating house.

  • An ethical elephant sanctuary

Half a day at a sanctuary where elephants are simply observed in their own surroundings, with no riding, bathing or shows. We choose such places carefully.

  • For teenagers

Longer jungle walks, a try-dive and perhaps Ang Thong Marine Park by kayak.

  • A different beach

In the European summer holidays the Gulf is usually drier than the Andaman coast; in winter, the Andaman islands are an option too.

Practical considerations

  • On the Gulf coast the wettest months are usually around October to December, and in Khao Sok it can rain at any time: this is rainforest. We'd shape the route around your holiday dates.
  • Life jackets are essential for children on the floating houses and boats; we check small sizes in advance. The lake houses are simple, and power there is sometimes only available in the evening.
  • Heat and humidity tire children faster than adults, so activities are planned for mornings and late afternoons.
  • For vaccinations and health advice before travel, it's worth speaking to your family doctor or a travel clinic.

General guidance only. Seasons, weather and wildlife are never guaranteed, and travel requirements are always worth checking before you go.
