Fiji

Islands where you're greeted with 'bula', and some of the South Pacific's most colourful reefs lie just offshore.

Fiji is made up of more than three hundred islands, yet most travellers see only a handful. From Viti Levu, boats head out to the Mamanuca and Yasawa groups — sandbars, clear lagoons and villages where evenings begin with a kava ceremony.

Further north-east lie greener, wilder Vanua Levu and Taveuni, with rainforest and waterfalls, and in the strait between them are soft-coral reefs prized by divers. Fiji suits families and couples especially well: distances are short, and the warmth of the people is felt from the very first day.

Experiences to consider

  1. 01

The reefs of Vanua Levu and Taveuni

Snorkelling or diving in sheltered bays and in the Somosomo Strait, where the reefs are draped in colourful soft corals.

  2. 02

    The Yasawa chain

Move from island to island, stopping where you like — volcanic hills, empty bays and evenings by the sea.

  3. 03

    Village life

A village visit with a sevusevu ceremony, a lovo feast cooked in an earth oven, and singing that carries on long after dinner.
