Belize is one of the smallest countries in Central America, but its contrasts are large. Along its coast runs the Belize Barrier Reef — part of a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the largest reef systems in the world. Hundreds of small islands, known as cayes, live at their own pace: bare feet, bicycles on sandy lanes and evenings when everyone gathers for the sunset.

Inland, the landscape is entirely different. In the Cayo District rivers wind through tropical forest, the temples of Xunantunich and Caracol stand in the jungle, and caves hold traces of ancient Maya ceremony. With English as the official language and short distances, Belize is an easy choice even for a first journey to the region.

Experiences to consider

  1. 01

The reef and the Great Blue Hole

Snorkelling among coral, rays and sea turtles and, for experienced divers, the famous Great Blue Hole — just as striking seen from a small plane.

  2. 02

    Life on the cayes

Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye — from an easy, laid-back rhythm to quiet stays over the water. The smaller islands suit those in search of silence.

  3. 03

Maya temples in the Cayo jungle

Xunantunich, reached by a hand-cranked river ferry, and Caracol, deep in the forest. For the adventurous, the Actun Tunichil Muknal cave, explored on foot and swimming with a guide.

  4. 04

    The jungle and its residents

The Cockscomb Basin sanctuary, created to protect jaguars, birdwatching and guided night walks. Seeing a jaguar is rare, but tracks and sounds are plentiful.
