Sri Lanka & the Maldives — a honeymoon or special journey

Ancient cities, tea hills by train, the south coast — and a few days in the Indian Ocean

Illustrative journey ideas — not bookable packages. No prices, dates or accommodation are implied.

Sri Lanka and the Maldives complement each other naturally. The first part of the journey is full of discovery: rock fortresses and cave temples in the Cultural Triangle, a slow train through the tea hills, colonial Galle and the coves of the south coast. The second — a short flight from Colombo — is given over to rest on the water.

It’s a combination that suits far more than honeymoons. An anniversary, a milestone birthday or simply a long-postponed trip for two — what matters is that the route reflects you: perhaps more hiking and fewer museums, perhaps more time by the pool. This sample is only a starting point.

The route

The journey

  1. Colombo
  2. Sigiriya & Dambulla
  3. Kandy
  4. Nuwara Eliya & Ella
  5. Galle & the south coast
  6. Maldives
  1. A row of Buddha statues in the dim light of the Dambulla cave temple

    01Days 1–4 · The Cultural Triangle

    Rock fortresses and cave temples

From Colombo to the island’s centre, staying among jungle and lakes. Early one morning, the climb up Sigiriya while it’s still cool; later, the painted cave temples of Dambulla and the ruins of Polonnaruwa, best explored by bicycle. An afternoon safari in Minneriya or Kaudulla might follow, where elephants often gather at certain times of year.

  2. Temple buildings on the shore of Kandy Lake, with forested hills behind

    02Days 5–6 · Kandy

    The last royal capital

Kandy sits beside a lake among the hills. The Temple of the Tooth, the botanical gardens at Peradeniya and the evening ceremony of drums and oil lamps — with slow walks and a first taste of the island’s spices in between.

  3. A blue train crossing the Nine Arches Bridge among forested hills, Ella, Sri Lanka

    03Days 7–10 · Tea country

    By train through the clouds

The train from Kandy or Nanu Oya to Ella winds through tea estates, tunnels and tiny stations — one of Asia’s loveliest stretches of railway. A night or two in a colonial tea bungalow, then Ella, with easy hikes up Little Adam’s Peak and past the Nine Arches Bridge.

  4. Galle Fort lighthouse and palms beside the sea at dusk, Sri Lanka

    04Days 11–14 · Galle & the south coast

    Fort lanes and quiet bays

On the way south, a safari in Udawalawe is an option. Then Galle Fort, with its galleries, cafés and sunset on the ramparts, and nearby villas and boutique hotels on quiet bays. The days are slow: swimming, massages, dinners of fresh fish.

  5. Two people walking along a long sandbank towards a small islet, Maldives

    05Days 15–20 · The Maldives

A few days on the water

From the south coast by expressway back to Colombo airport, then around an hour and a half’s flight to Malé. The onward transfer depends on your island: speedboat or seaplane. A few days on one island — a house reef straight from the beach, sandbanks and evenings with nowhere to hurry to.

Experience highlights

  1. 01

    Sunrise at Sigiriya

An early climb to the summit while the plain below is still wrapped in mist.

  2. 02

    The train to Ella

A few hours at an open window — tea terraces, waterfalls and hill villages.

  3. 03

    Sunset on Galle’s ramparts

An evening walk along the fort walls as local families gather by the lighthouse.

  4. 04

    Dinner on a sandbank

Many Maldivian islands offer private dinners on the sand or by the water — a fitting way to mark the occasion.

First, we listen. Then, we explore what's possible.

Make it your own

  • For an anniversary or milestone

The same route at a gentler pace: fewer bases, more time in villas and one special dinner in each chapter.

  • More active

A night hike up Adam’s Peak, village cycling routes, whale-watching from Mirissa (in season) and diving in the Maldives.

  • The east coast in summer

In summer, when the south-west coast is often wetter, the beach days can move east — to Trincomalee or Pasikuda.

  • Without the Maldives

If you’d rather stay in one country, the ending can become a longer stay at a villa on Sri Lanka’s coast.

Practical considerations

  • Sri Lanka has two monsoons, so the best time for the south-west and east coasts differs; roughly December to March often suits the south, and summer the east.
  • Distances are short but roads are slow — travelling with a driver is easiest, and train seats on popular stretches are worth reserving ahead.
  • Temples ask visitors to cover shoulders and knees and to remove their shoes.
  • The time difference between Sri Lanka and the Maldives is small, so the flight shouldn’t upset your rhythm.

General guidance only. Seasons, weather and wildlife are never guaranteed, and travel requirements are always worth checking before you go.
