Indonesia
Thousands of islands, volcanoes and rice terraces — each with its own language, rituals and colour of sea.

Indonesia isn't one destination but an archipelago spread across several time zones. You might begin a morning among incense smoke in a Balinese temple, and a few days later sail a traditional phinisi between the tawny hills of Komodo, where giant monitor lizards pace the shoreline.
Even Bali, which many feel they already know, has a second face. Away from the busy southern resorts lie the rice fields of the Sidemen valley with Mount Agung on the horizon, the cool highlands of Munduk in the north and the quiet coastal villages of Amed, where fishermen return in outrigger jukung at dawn.
It's a country where rest and adventure sit easily together: a private villa with a pool among the palms, sunrise over the Bromo caldera, snorkelling on some of the richest reefs on earth. The art is choosing a few islands rather than trying to see them all.
Why go
- 01
Java: temples and volcanoes
The Buddhist monument of Borobudur, best visited early, the Hindu temples of Prambanan and the batik workshops of Yogyakarta. In East Java, sunrise over the Bromo caldera and the Tengger sand sea.
- 02
Komodo and Flores
A few days by boat from Labuan Bajo: the viewpoint on Padar, pink-sand beaches, Komodo dragons and snorkelling where currents bring the fish. Deeper into Flores lie the crater lakes of Kelimutu and traditional mountain villages.
- 03
Raja Ampat
In remote West Papua: jungle-covered limestone islets, the lagoons of Pianemo and reefs counted among the most diverse on earth. The journey is longer, but the reward is silence, clear water and life at the pace of a boat or a small island lodge.
- 04
Lombok, the Gilis and Sumba
On Lombok, the Rinjani volcano and a wild southern coast; on the Gili islands, bicycles instead of cars. Further east lies Sumba: villages of tall thatched roofs, ikat weavers and long empty beaches where horses gallop at dusk.
Ways to travel
Ways to experience it
Ways to travel aren't separate paths — the best journeys often bring several together.
Exceptional stays & escapes
Private villas among Bali's rice fields, stilted cottages above the reef in Raja Ampat and phinisi boats with a handful of cabins for the Komodo islands.
Adventure & active travel
Sunrise on the rim of Bromo, a trek up Rinjani, diving in Komodo's currents or kayaking between the islets of Raja Ampat.
Culture & discovery
Temple ceremonies on Bali, the court music and batik of Java, Sumba's megalithic tombs and weaving traditions.
Honeymoons & special journeys
A villa with a pool above the jungle, dinner on the sand and a few nights aboard a boat among empty bays.
Family journeys
Cycling paths around Ubud, snorkelling off the Gilis and villas with room for everyone — to children, Indonesia feels like a book of adventures.
Tailor-made journeys
Domestic flights, boats and island transfers arranged so the journey feels smooth rather than exhausting.

When to go
Across much of the country the dry season generally runs from around May to October and the wet season from November to March, though downpours are often short and local. In Raja Ampat the sea is frequently calmer from October to April. Conditions vary from island to island and year to year.
How long to allow
Allow at least 12–14 days for two island regions and three weeks for three. Distances are long, so plan to stay at least a few nights in each place.
Natural combinations
Indonesia can easily fill a whole journey, but it pairs well with a Singapore stopover on the way or with the islands of the Philippines. For more culture, Japan or Thailand make natural companions.
Areas to explore
Bali
Ubud, Sidemen, the Munduk highlands and the calmer north and east coasts.
Java

The short answer: longer than it first seems. How much the journey itself takes, how much rest you'll want, and how to balance moving with staying still.
