We often picture Morocco as a land of medinas, mountains and Sahara dunes. This route heads the other way – west, to the Atlantic. Here a cool trade wind blows, fishing boats come back into port every morning, argan trees grow on the dry hills and the beaches are so long there's always room. It's a calmer, easier journey: short transfers, several nights in each place and plenty of time simply to be.

It suits couples, families with children and anyone who'd like Morocco without the rush – with fresh fish at the harbour, a cooking class, a surf lesson on the beach and evenings on medina roof terraces. There's no desert on this route, and that's a deliberate choice. The stays – from a riad in Essaouira's medina to simple guesthouses by the waves – would be chosen to suit you.

The route

The journey

  1. Marrakech
  2. Essaouira
  3. Sidi Kaouki
  4. Imsouane or Taghazout
  5. Taroudant
  6. Agadir
  1. Blue fishing boats and boatyards in the harbour of Essaouira

    01Days 1–3 · Essaouira

    Blue boats and white walls

From Marrakech airport, around three hours west over hills of argan trees until the white houses of Essaouira appear behind their eighteenth-century ramparts. The medina here is calm and easy to walk: woodcarvers' workshops, spice shops and, in the evenings, the rhythms of Gnaoua music. In the mornings it's worth heading down to the harbour as the blue fishing boats come in, and at lunchtime choosing a fish to be grilled on the spot. On the second day, a cooking class or a visit to a women's argan cooperative to see how the oil is made by hand.

  2. A donkey on a rocky shore above the Atlantic and a long beach, Sidi Kaouki

    02Days 4–5 · Sidi Kaouki

    A beach without end

Just half an hour south lies Sidi Kaouki: a few houses, a small shrine on the shore and kilometres of sand. There's nothing to 'see' here, and that's its charm: long walks along the beach at low tide, a ride on horseback or by camel along the water's edge, a lazy afternoon on a terrace. The wind blows often, making it a favourite spot for windsurfing and kitesurfing; children love watching the kites and hunting for shells.

  3. Surfers carrying their boards along the beach by the waves, Imsouane

    03Days 6–8 · Imsouane or Taghazout

    The first wave

Around two hours south along the coast road are two different places for surf lessons. Imsouane is a quiet fishing village on a long bay whose slow, long waves are ideal for beginners and children. Taghazout is livelier, with cafés, yoga studios and more places to eat in the evening. Lessons are with qualified instructors, in the mornings when the wind is lighter; afternoons are for the pool, a walk along the rocky headlands or an outing to a palm-filled gorge with natural pools in the hills behind Aourir.

  4. An arched gateway in the earthen walls of Taroudant

    04Days 9–10 · Taroudant & Agadir

Red walls in the Souss valley

To finish, around an hour and a half inland to Taroudant, sometimes called 'little Marrakech', though it is far quieter. The town is ringed by almost completely intact earthen walls, best circled by horse-drawn carriage in the evening; its markets are for locals rather than visitors, scented with oranges and spices from the orchards of the Souss valley. On the last day, less than an hour to Agadir airport and the flight home.

Make it your own

  • With young children

Fewer moves – perhaps just Essaouira and one place by the waves – stays with a pool and garden, surf lessons for children from a suitable age and beach time with no plan at all.

  • More surfing

A whole week in one place with daily lessons or a surf camp – best in autumn and winter, when the waves are bigger.

  • With Marrakech

Begin with a couple of nights in the Marrakech medina – riads, souks and gardens – before heading for the ocean.

  • Into the Anti-Atlas

From Taroudant, extend the journey to Tafraoute and the pink granite valleys of the Anti-Atlas – more driving, but a completely different landscape.

Practical considerations

  • A strong wind often blows on the coast, especially in summer: in Essaouira and Sidi Kaouki it keeps things cool, though it isn't always pleasant on the beach. Beginners can surf almost all year, while bigger waves usually come in autumn and winter.
  • The Atlantic is cooler than the Mediterranean, and surfers wear wetsuits for most of the year. Surf schools vary in standard, so we'd only choose qualified instructors, with lessons matched to age and experience.
  • Distances are short – the longest transfer is about three hours. It's easiest to arrive in Marrakech and fly home from Agadir; the choice of direct flights from Europe depends on the season.

General guidance only. Seasons, weather and wildlife are never guaranteed, and travel requirements are always worth checking before you go.
