Illustrative journey ideas — not bookable packages. No prices, dates or accommodation are implied.

The Peloponnese is only a few hours' drive from Athens, yet many travellers pass straight through it on their way to the islands. It's a pity, because here Greek history and everyday life are woven tightly together. The Lion Gate of Mycenae and the theatre of Epidaurus stand among olive groves, families stroll Nafplio's lanes in the evening, Monemvasia's old town hides in the shadow of its rock and, on the wild Mani peninsula, stone towers rise above the sea.

After a week on the mainland the route turns to the Cyclades, not to the most famous islands but to Naxos, which has room to breathe: long sandy beaches, mountain villages and cooking from local farms. This sample route suits families as well as couples who enjoy history without hurrying; it could be slowed down, shortened, or take Milos instead of Naxos.

  1. Athens
  2. Nafplio
  3. Mycenae & Epidaurus
  4. Monemvasia
  5. The Mani
  6. Piraeus
  7. Naxos
  8. Athens
  1. The Bourtzi fortress in the bay of Nafplio shortly before sunset, with pastel mountains beyond

    01Days 1–3 · Nafplio

    Greece's first capital

From Athens airport it's about two hours' drive to Nafplio, a graceful harbour town that was once the first capital of modern Greece. Venetian houses with balconies, bougainvillea, ice-cream shops along the quay and the Bourtzi fortress in the middle of the bay. In the morning it's worth climbing the steps to the Palamidi fortress, and spending the evening as the locals do, strolling the waterfront while children play in the square.

  2. The ancient theatre of Epidaurus among wooded hills

    02Day 4 · Mycenae & Epidaurus

    Myths you can touch

A day with a guide who turns myths into stories: an early morning at Mycenae, by the Lion Gate and the Treasury of Atreus, before the heat, then Epidaurus, a theatre whose acoustics are such that a coin dropped on stage can be heard from the top rows. For children it often becomes the favourite place of the whole trip. In the afternoon, a swim at a nearby beach and back to Nafplio for the evening.

  3. Stone houses and tiled roofs above the sea in an old walled town on a rock

    03Days 5–6 · Monemvasia

A town hidden beneath a rock

About three hours south, over the Arcadian hills and through orange groves, to Monemvasia, a rock in the sea joined to the mainland by a narrow causeway. Cars stay outside the walls; inside are cobbled lanes, Byzantine churches and stone houses where you can stay the night. Two nights let you see the town both empty and in evening light, and climb in the morning to the upper town, with the whole coast spread out below.

  4. A stone tower house in a Mani village, with a hillside behind

    04Days 7–9 · The Mani

    Stone, sea and towers

Past the harbour of Gythio into the Mani, the middle of the Peloponnese's three 'fingers'. It's a harsh, stony land where villages of tower houses stand on the hills and coves such as Limeni hide below. From Areopoli you can drive to the towers of Vathia and to Cape Tainaro at the southern tip of the mainland, take a boat into the Diros caves or simply spend an afternoon by clear water. Stays here are often in restored stone towers.

  5. Naxos town and the stone causeway to the islet of Palatia, with people swimming alongside

    05Days 10–13 · Naxos

An island with room to spare

About four hours' drive to Piraeus and a ferry to Naxos, the largest of the Cyclades. Above the harbour, Venetian lanes wind through the old town of Chora, and on the shore stands the Portara, the marble doorway of a never-finished temple of Apollo. The south-western beaches are long and shallow, easy for children; up in the mountains are the villages of Chalki, Filoti and Apeiranthos, with local cheeses and potatoes on the table. You'd return to Athens by ferry or a short flight.

Experience highlights

  1. 01

    An evening on Nafplio's waterfront

The sun sets behind the Bourtzi fortress and the whole town comes out for a stroll.

  2. 02

    The acoustics of Epidaurus

A whisper on stage heard in the top rows: a small miracle children want to test for themselves.

  3. 03

    A night within Monemvasia's walls

Once the day visitors leave, only the stone, the sea and the lamplight remain.

  4. 04

    The mountain villages of Naxos

Marble-paved lanes, cafés beneath plane trees and cheese from a farm down the road.

First, we listen. Then, we explore what's possible.

Make it your own

  • With younger children

Fewer moves: longer in Nafplio, Monemvasia as a day trip and more beach days on Naxos.

  • A different island

Instead of Naxos, Milos with its white cliffs and coves reached by boat, or quieter Sifnos with its cooking.

  • More antiquity

A few days in Athens at the start, Ancient Corinth on the way, or Mystras near Sparta between Monemvasia and the Mani.

  • More active

Walks on the Mani's old paths, kayaking along the coast or a climb up Mount Zas, the highest point in the Cyclades.

Practical considerations

  • May to June and September to October are usually the most pleasant: the sea is warm while the heat and crowds are lower; July and August on the mainland can be very hot.
  • A car is the easiest way to travel the Peloponnese; the roads are good, though winding and narrow in the Mani.
  • Ferry timetables and frequency depend on the season, so the island part would be built around the sailings in your month.

General guidance only. Seasons, weather and wildlife are never guaranteed, and travel requirements are always worth checking before you go.
