In the Cordillera of northern Luzon, rice terraces climb the mountainsides like giant staircases. Ifugao communities have built and tended them for generations, and some villages, such as Batad, are still reached only on foot. Further north, Sagada is cool and smells of pine, and its limestone cliffs and caves hold the burial traditions of the Kankanaey people; we visit them with a local guide and with the respect any burial place deserves.
The second part of the journey is Batanes, the smallest province in the Philippines, between Luzon and Taiwan. There are no lagoons here: only green hills grazed by cattle, low Ivatan stone houses built to withstand typhoons, and an ocean whose colour changes with the wind. It is a journey for curious, active travellers who don't mind long roads, plenty of steps and the occasional cancelled flight. The pace and stays would be shaped around you.

01Days 1–2 · Manila & Banaue
Up to where the terraces begin
After the long flight, a night in central Manila and, if you like, a walk through the old walled city of Intramuros. The next day is a long drive north with a driver, across the plains and ever higher into the Cordillera, reaching Banaue by evening. Most of the day is spent on the road, so the stops are planned without hurry. The first view of the terraces from the viewpoint is a fine reward for the journey.
02Days 3–4 · Batad
A village reached only on foot
A short drive to the saddle, then on foot down into Batad, whose stone terraces curve like an amphitheatre around the village. Two nights in a simple guesthouse let you see how the valley lives: with a local guide you walk along the narrow terrace walls and watch the fields being worked, and the more energetic can descend the steep steps to Tappiyah waterfall. The paths are steep and slippery after rain, so good stamina and sturdy shoes are needed.
03Days 5–7 · Sagada
Pines, mist and the cliffs of the ancestors
Via Bontoc to Sagada, a cool mountain town among the pines. At dawn you can watch from a hilltop as a sea of cloud fills the valleys. With a local guide you walk through Echo Valley, where coffins hang on the cliffs: a Kankanaey tradition of honouring the ancestors. Here voices stay low, nothing is touched, and photographs are taken only from a distance and with the guide's agreement. For those seeking adventure, Sumaguing cave with a guide: slippery rock, water up to the knees and lantern light.
04Days 8–11 · Batan Island
Hills between two seas
The road back down to the lowlands with a night in the mountain city of Baguio, then Manila and an early short flight to Basco, the capital of Batanes. On Batan the days are slow: by bicycle or car over the Vayang hills and the pastures of Racuh a Payaman, past Spanish-era churches and Ivatan stone houses with thick thatched roofs. Evenings bring the lighthouse on the Naidi hills and a wind that never quite drops.
05Days 12–13 · Sabtang Island
Stone villages across the strait
If the sea allows, a small boat crosses from Ivana port to Sabtang. In the villages of Chavayan and Savidug, stone houses stand as they did a century ago, women weave the vakul, a traditional headdress against sun and rain, and grassy cliffs roll along the coast. On the last day, the flight to Manila and onward home, with time in hand in case the weather intervenes.
Experience highlights
- 01
The Batad amphitheatre
Stone rice terraces encircling a village reached only by footpath.
- 02
Echo Valley with a local guide
A pine-forest trail and cliffs with hanging coffins, experienced quietly, respectfully and with local explanation.
- 03
Ivatan stone houses
Thick-walled, thatched houses built to withstand typhoons, on Batan and Sabtang.
- 04
The Vayang hills
Rolling green hills tumbling to the ocean, at their best early in the morning or towards evening.
First, we listen. Then, we explore what's possible.
Make it your own
Less time on the road
Replace part of the drive into the mountains with a domestic flight to Cauayan and a shorter road transfer to Banaue.
More walking
A multi-day trek between terrace villages, such as Banaue to Batad via Cambulo, with a local guide and nights in the villages.
Only mountains, or only islands
For a shorter journey, choose only the Cordillera or only Batanes; each half stands on its own.
With the sea at the end
For warm water at the end, a few days in Palawan or the Visayas, though this journey deliberately leaves the lagoons out.
Practical considerations
- Flights to Batanes are often cancelled or delayed by wind and typhoons; the calmest period is usually around March to May, with higher risk from June to November, so the route keeps a spare day.
- Drives in the Cordillera are long, often 6–9 hours, and depend on weather and landslides, especially in the rainy season.
- Batad and Sagada involve many steps and steep paths; Sagada's caves are visited only with a local guide, and conditions depend on water levels and weather.
- Stays in the mountain villages and on Batanes are simple; cash is essential and mobile signal can be weak.
General guidance only. Seasons, weather and wildlife are never guaranteed, and travel requirements are always worth checking before you go.
